Cargo will be transported from Mombasa to Mai Mahiu’s Inland Depot, following which it will be transported to Malaba through the Mai Mahiu-Longonot railway.
However, numerous transportation stakeholders have objected to the move. The chairman of the truck drivers’ group expressed his displeasure with KR’s plan, warning that it would result in the loss of many jobs and the collapse of companies along the vital Mombasa route.
According to Samson, the towns rely mostly on road users, and numerous sources of income will be impacted.
“This will mean job losses for tens of truck drivers, mechanics and also insurance companies that offer insurance to cargo and trucks,” he said.
